Maungawhau / Mt Eden

Auckland's highest mainland volcanic cone, offering panoramic views of the city, its harbours, and the surrounding landscape.

About this place

Maungawhau / Mt Eden is a dormant volcano with immense cultural and geological significance. As one of the most prominent pre-European pā (fortified village) sites in the Auckland isthmus, its slopes are lined with extensive earthworks, including terraces and pits, that are still clearly visible today. The mountain is a revered ancestral site for local iwi (tribes).

A boardwalk has been constructed around the crater rim to protect the sensitive archaeological features while allowing visitors to enjoy the expansive views. From the summit, you can see across the Waitematā and Manukau Harbours, the central city skyline with the Sky Tower, and numerous other volcanic cones that dot the Auckland landscape.

Fitting it into your itinerary

Allow 1-2 hours for Maungawhau / Mt Eden, plus drive time from wherever you spend the night before. Distances in Auckland look short on a map, but winding roads, roadworks and campervan speeds stretch them, so build this stop around an unhurried day rather than squeezing it between long drives. Best time to go: Clear days offer the best views, which are possible at any time of year. Check road conditions and seasonal ferry timetables before you lock in dates. It suits travellers who want to slow down and see Auckland properly rather than tick it off. Send your plan to an Acrossnz advisor and we'll check the timing works.

Practical tips

  • The summit road is closed to private vehicles, so be prepared for a short but steep walk from the lower car park to the top.
  • Visit near sunrise or sunset for particularly impressive light over the city and Hauraki Gulf.
  • Please respect the cultural significance of this tupuna maunga (ancestral mountain) by staying on the formal paths and boardwalks.
