Fiordland
Kepler Track
The Kepler Track is one of New Zealand's 'Great Walks', a stunning 60km loop hike that showcases Fiordland's alpine tussock lands, vast lakes, and lush native forest.
About this place
Designed to show off the very best of Fiordland, the Kepler Track is a purpose-built trail that takes hikers on a spectacular journey. The route ascends from the shores of Lake Te Anau through mossy beech forest to exposed alpine ridgelines with panoramic views. From these heights, you can see across the Te Anau basin, the Kepler Mountains, and deep into the Fiordland wilderness.
Typically walked over three to four days, the track is a challenging but rewarding adventure. Hikers stay in a series of well-serviced Department of Conservation huts or campsites along the way. For those with less time, popular day walk options include the walk to Luxmore Hut for incredible views, or a gentle walk through the forest along the shores of Lake Te Anau.
Fitting it into your itinerary
Allow 3-4 days for the full loop, or partial day walks. for Kepler Track, plus drive time from wherever you spend the night before. Distances in Fiordland look short on a map, but winding roads, roadworks and campervan speeds stretch them, so build this stop around an unhurried day rather than squeezing it between long drives. Best time to go: The recommended season for the full track is during the Great Walk season (late spring to autumn). Check road conditions and seasonal ferry timetables before you lock in dates. It suits travellers who want to slow down and see Fiordland properly rather than tick it off. Send your plan to an Acrossnz advisor and we'll check the timing works.

Practical tips
- Bookings for huts and campsites are essential during the Great Walk season (typically October-April) and should be made many months in advance.
- Be fully prepared for all weather conditions; the alpine sections are exposed and weather can change rapidly, even in summer.
- A good level of fitness is required for the full track, which involves significant climbs and long hiking days.
