Mackenzie & Aoraki
Lake Pukaki
This vast, glacial-fed lake is renowned for its intense blue colour and for providing the definitive foreground view of Aoraki/Mount Cook.
About this place
Larger than Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki also owes its striking, opaque blue colour to finely ground 'glacial flour' suspended in its waters. The lake is fed by the Tasman and Hooker Rivers, which drain the major glaciers of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The road running along its western shoreline, State Highway 80, is one of the most scenic drives in the country.
The southern end of the lake offers what is arguably New Zealand’s most famous mountain vista. From the visitor centre viewpoint, Aoraki/Mount Cook appears perfectly framed at the head of the long, blue lake. On a calm day, the mountain’s reflection in the water creates a truly unforgettable and iconic New Zealand scene.
Fitting it into your itinerary
Allow a few hours for Lake Pukaki, plus drive time from wherever you spend the night before. Distances in Mackenzie & Aoraki look short on a map, but winding roads, roadworks and campervan speeds stretch them, so build this stop around an unhurried day rather than squeezing it between long drives. Best time to go: Spectacular in all seasons, with the surrounding mountains capped in snow for much of the year. Check road conditions and seasonal ferry timetables before you lock in dates. It suits travellers who want to slow down and see Mackenzie & Aoraki properly rather than tick it off. Send your plan to an Acrossnz advisor and we'll check the timing works.
