Queenstown & Wānaka

Roys Peak

A challenging but rewarding day hike near Wānaka that delivers one of New Zealand’s most famous panoramic views over Lake Wānaka and Mount Aspiring.

About this place

The Roys Peak Track is a demanding uphill climb, zig-zagging steadily through private farmland to the summit. The trail itself is a wide, well-formed farm track, but its relentless gradient requires a good level of fitness. The reward for your effort is an absolutely breathtaking vista that unfolds as you ascend.

From the famous lookout point and the summit itself, you get a 360-degree view of Lake Wānaka, its islands, and the towering peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park. It’s a popular spot for photography, especially at sunrise. Remember that the track crosses private land and is closed for lambing each spring.

Fitting it into your itinerary

Allow 5-7 hours return walk for Roys Peak, plus drive time from wherever you spend the night before. Distances in Queenstown & Wānaka look short on a map, but winding roads, roadworks and campervan speeds stretch them, so build this stop around an unhurried day rather than squeezing it between long drives. Best time to go: Best hiked in the summer and autumn months for clearer weather and track access. Check road conditions and seasonal ferry timetables before you lock in dates. It suits travellers who want to slow down and see Queenstown & Wānaka properly rather than tick it off. Send your plan to an Acrossnz advisor and we'll check the timing works.

Practical tips

  • Start early in the morning to avoid the midday sun and crowds, especially in summer.
  • Take plenty of water, food, and sun protection, as the track is very exposed with no shade or water sources.
  • Check the track status before you go, as it closes annually for lambing from 1 October to 10 November.
