Rotorua & Bay of Plenty
Redwoods treewalk
The Redwoods Treewalk offers a unique perspective of the Whakarewarewa Forest from a series of suspension bridges suspended high amongst giant redwood trees.
About this place
This walkway consists of over 20 suspension bridges connected between magnificent Californian coastal redwoods, which were planted in the early 1900s. The walk allows visitors to get up close to these towering trees, some reaching over 75 metres tall. The experience provides an elevated view of the forest floor, covered in native ferns and undergrowth.
In addition to the daytime walk, there is a nighttime experience where the forest is illuminated by a series of specially designed lanterns and lights. This creates a completely different atmosphere, highlighting the scale of the trees and the textures of the forest. The walkway is engineered to be gentle on the trees, using a unique sling mounting system.
Fitting it into your itinerary
Allow about 45 minutes to an hour for Redwoods treewalk, plus drive time from wherever you spend the night before. Distances in Rotorua & Bay of Plenty look short on a map, but winding roads, roadworks and campervan speeds stretch them, so build this stop around an unhurried day rather than squeezing it between long drives. Best time to go: Open year-round, with the night-time walk offering a special experience in any weather. Check road conditions and seasonal ferry timetables before you lock in dates. It suits travellers who want to slow down and see Rotorua & Bay of Plenty properly rather than tick it off. Send your plan to an Acrossnz advisor and we'll check the timing works.
