Taupō & Tongariro
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
A one-day trek across a spectacular volcanic landscape in a dual World Heritage Park.
About this place
Often cited as one of New Zealand's best one-day hikes, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing traverses the length of Mount Tongariro. The track takes in unique landforms like steaming vents, old lava flows, and the brilliant Emerald Lakes. This area is within Tongariro National Park, a place of deep spiritual and cultural significance for local iwi, Ngāti Tūwharetoa.
This is a 19.4-kilometre point-to-point walk that requires a good level of fitness. The terrain is varied and can be steep and uneven in sections, with a significant amount of climbing. Weather conditions can change rapidly in the alpine environment, so being well-prepared is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
Fitting it into your itinerary
Allow a full day for Tongariro Alpine Crossing, plus drive time from wherever you spend the night before. Distances in Taupō & Tongariro look short on a map, but winding roads, roadworks and campervan speeds stretch them, so build this stop around an unhurried day rather than squeezing it between long drives. Best time to go: The summer months (December to March) generally offer the most stable weather conditions. Check road conditions and seasonal ferry timetables before you lock in dates. It suits travellers who want to slow down and see Taupō & Tongariro properly rather than tick it off. Send your plan to an Acrossnz advisor and we'll check the timing works.

- Pack layers of clothing, plenty of water, food, and sun protection, regardless of the forecast.
