Waikato & Waitomo
Waitomo glowworm caves
Drift silently by boat through underground caverns illuminated by thousands of tiny glowworms.
About this place
The Waitomo Caves are a world-renowned natural attraction, famous for their population of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm species unique to New Zealand. Guided tours lead visitors through magnificent limestone formations, including tall chambers and delicate stalactites and stalagmites. Guides, many of whom are descendants of the original Māori chief who explored the caves, share the history and geology of this subterranean wonder.
The highlight for most is the serene boat ride along the underground Waitomo River. In the silent darkness, the cave ceiling becomes a galaxy of tiny blue-green lights from the thousands of glowworms overhead. This tranquil and magical experience is a unique spectacle of nature and provides a quiet moment of reflection away from the outside world.
Fitting it into your itinerary
Allow 2-3 hours for a standard tour for Waitomo glowworm caves, plus drive time from wherever you spend the night before. Distances in Waikato & Waitomo look short on a map, but winding roads, roadworks and campervan speeds stretch them, so build this stop around an unhurried day rather than squeezing it between long drives. Best time to go: The caves are an excellent all-weather activity, accessible and consistently impressive at any time of year. Check road conditions and seasonal ferry timetables before you lock in dates. It suits travellers who want to slow down and see Waikato & Waitomo properly rather than tick it off. Send your plan to an Acrossnz advisor and we'll check the timing works.
