Lake Matheson

A tranquil glacial lake celebrated for its perfect mirror reflections of New Zealand's highest peaks, Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.

About this place

Nestled in ancient forest near Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson's incredible reflective surface is due to the dark, tannin-stained water. The natural brown colouring, a result of organic matter leaching from the forest floor, creates a dark canvas perfect for mirroring the sky and mountains.

An easy, well-maintained walking track circuits the lake, taking visitors through beautiful native rainforest to purpose-built viewing platforms. The jetty and 'Reflection Island' viewpoints are positioned to capture the iconic mountain images on a calm day.

Fitting it into your itinerary

Allow 1.5-2 hours for Lake Matheson, plus drive time from wherever you spend the night before. Distances in West Coast look short on a map, but winding roads, roadworks and campervan speeds stretch them, so build this stop around an unhurried day rather than squeezing it between long drives. Best time to go: Calm, clear mornings, especially during autumn and winter, offer the greatest opportunity for perfect reflections. Check road conditions and seasonal ferry timetables before you lock in dates. It suits travellers who want to slow down and see West Coast properly rather than tick it off. Send your plan to an Acrossnz advisor and we'll check the timing works.

Practical tips

  • Visit at dawn or dusk for the best chance of calm, windless conditions, which are essential for the mirror-like reflections.
  • The full lake circuit walk is a gentle stroll and takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete.
  • Even if the mountains are shrouded in cloud, the walk itself through the lush, mossy rainforest is a rewarding experience.
